Department of Industrial Engineering proves the value of 3D printing in manufacturing, architecture, and education

Stellenbosch University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, led by Professor Dimitri Dimitrov and the Laboratory for Rapid Product Development, set out to quantify 3D printing’s value for manufacturing, architecture, medicine and education. The challenge was to produce objective, repeatable data and real-world best practices so industry could make informed decisions and students across disciplines could gain hands‑on experience with advanced manufacturing technologies.

The department standardized on the cost‑effective 3D Systems ZPrinter 310 and completed more than 800 projects to build a documented capability profile and material-performance matrix. Applied outcomes include rapid prototyping and tooling, molds for investment and sand casting, large architectural models (e.g., the Durban Millennium Tower) and CT/MRI‑derived anatomical models; findings show significant time savings (up to 80% for short metal runs), improved design validation and stronger university–industry collaboration, while enhancing teaching and research.
