Daimler Trucks Revs Up Design Verification with MultiJet Printing

Daimler Trucks North America, a leading North American manufacturer of heavy- and medium-duty trucks (including Freightliner and Thomas Built Buses), faced time-consuming pre-production mock-ups to verify critical clearances, pipe routing and assembly procedures. Visualizing and checking long-lead components and brackets in CAD proved difficult, creating risks and delays in the design-to-manufacturing process and assembly training.

Using the ProJet 5000 large-format 3D printer and tough VisiJet MX material, Daimler prints full-scale pipes, components and go/no-go gauges for weekly use in mock-ups and training. The accurate, durable prints can be drilled, tapped and handled like production parts, collapsing the verification process, enabling earlier assembly training and shaving weeks off pre-production—speeding time to market.
