Color Jet 3D Printing (CJP) Helps Architects at Sagrada Familia Follow Gaudi's Method While Saving Time and Money

The Sagrada Familia Technical Office, responsible for completing Antoni Gaudí’s Expiatory Church, faced the challenge of reconstructing extremely complex, nonstandard forms from shattered historic models and limited documentation. Traditional 2D drawings and hand-crafted plaster models were slow, material-intensive, and error-prone, making faithful, timely completion difficult on donation-based funding.

The team adopted 3D CAD and two 3D Systems Spectrum Z510 printers to automate model production, quickly turning digital files into accurate plaster-like parts that can mate with historic fragments. The result: finer, functional models produced faster with less material, improved communication with constructors, fewer errors, and significant time and cost savings.
