Black & Decker Energizes Product Development, Improves Aesthetics, Ergonomics with ProJet Concept Models

Black & Decker, a global leader in power tools and home-improvement products, faced a growing need for fast, cost-effective early concept models to evaluate product aesthetics and ergonomics. As designers moved to 3D CAD, demand for physical models outpaced their prototype center; outsourcing and CNC work were too slow and expensive, and designers needed a way to produce multiple iterations quickly in-house.

They installed the 3D Systems Projet CJP full-color 3D printer — a fast, affordable, easy-to-use system that designers rapidly embraced. The printer cut model production time by as much as 75%, enabled more early iterations that improved look and feel, freed CNC resources for final tooling, and helped accelerate product development and time-to-market.
