Artist Uses 3D Reverse Engineering To Scale Sculpture with Ease

3D Systems helped Milwaukee sculptor Frank Savage solve a tricky scaling problem: he was asked to recreate his intricate "Flame" sculpture at four times its original 10‑inch size but needed to preserve the design’s fine details. Because hand‑scaling would be slow and risk losing the piece’s sharp, complex surfaces, Savage turned to Advanced Design Concepts (ADC) for a digital solution.

ADC scanned the original with a Perceptron ScanWorks system and used 3D Systems’ Geomagic Wrap to turn the point‑cloud data into an exact 3D model. The software preserved delicate features like the flame tips during polygonization, so Savage now has a precise digital master he can use to produce larger replicas quickly while maintaining the integrity of the original sculpture.
