AMT's Non-Contact Aerospace Part Verification Cuts First Article Inspection Time in Half

AMT (Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies) produces 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milled, stretched-formed, and sheet-metal aerospace parts and faced a persistent bottleneck in quality inspection: traditional coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) are slow, require skilled operators, and constrain throughput just as manufacturing capacity has increased. With customers pushing for standardized, faster inspection to support just-in-time inventory, AMT needed a faster, more flexible way to verify complex parts and reflective materials like aluminum and titanium.

AMT implemented Metron Systems’ MSG2 non-contact laser scanner and 3D Systems’ Geomagic Control software to capture dense point clouds and perform automated part-to-CAD comparisons with color maps and report generation. The new workflow cut first-article setup from half a day to about 30 minutes and reduced scan and verification time from hours to minutes, halving inspection time overall, lowering labor and equipment costs, enabling barcode-driven automated scans from a growing library of part profiles, and improving supply-chain responsiveness.
