Altamira Cave: Digitizing History Using 3D Systems 3D Scanning Software

3D Systems provided advanced 3D scanning software and tools to help Madrild-based Tragacanto tackle the preservation challenge of Spain’s Altamira Cave — a Paleolithic site with almost 200 fragile paintings that was closed to the public to prevent further damage. The goal was to create an exact virtual and physical replica that preserved the cave’s geometry, surface properties and painting techniques so visitors could experience the site without risking the original art.

Using 3D Systems’ Geomagic scanning software and a high‑performance 3D scanner, Tragacanto captured over six million data points across 2,600 m² (about one point every 5 mm), then used CNC milling, wax/silicone molds and custom artificial limestone (80% powdered limestone, 20% binders) to reproduce the cave’s surfaces and absorbency. The replica, built to the original’s temperature and finishing techniques, now resides in a museum wing expected to draw ~500,000 visitors a year and has successfully preserved the paintings’ look while inspiring similar digital preservation projects worldwide.
