3D Systems ProJet MJP 3D printing Delivers Realistic, Functional Prototypes

A global healthcare leader developing a diabetes pen needed realistic, functional prototypes of many small, complex parts for R&D, patient/doctor panels and tradeshows. After evaluating options, their reseller TechCluster recommended the 3D Systems ProJet MJP printer; its VisiJet material produced translucent parts with extremely fine detail for fit tests and fluid-level visualization. The remaining challenge was achieving the exact color of final injection-molded parts—painting added thickness and couldn’t reach internal features, so a new approach was required.

Engineers developed a solvent-based tinting process: parts are immersed in a heated (90°C / 194°F) bath for a controlled time to achieve the desired color intensity. The result: prototypes that match final-part color without adding size or compromising detail, finish or snap-fit performance. Using ProJet MJP plus the tinting method delivered fast, accurate, presentation-ready functional prototypes for the medical device program.
