3D Systems’ Geomagic Wrap and ColorJet 3D Printers Help Rebuild Afghanistan’s Past

3D Systems provided Geomagic Studio scanning software and a ProJet 3D printer with ColorJet technology to support an international team, led by UNESCO (United Nations Educations, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), in the effort to rebuild the Buddhas of Bamiyan — two colossal statues (53 meters and 35 meters) destroyed on March 12, 2001. The challenge was to reconstruct 1500-year-old sculptures from fragmented plaster, wood and debris in rugged terrain while preserving historical accuracy.

Under engineer Sekandar Ozod-Seradj, the team scanned large debris and the niches, used Geomagic Studio (including Mesh Doctor) to create watertight surface models, and 3D printed accurate 1/25-scale replicas on a ProJet ColorJet printer. Those scale models enabled rehearsed reassembly and logistical planning for the full reconstruction, while helping to foster a more positive local outlook and renewed hopes for tourism and peace.
