3D Systems Geomagic Design X Drives A Historic Jeep out of the Past

Direct Dimensions, a leading U.S. 3D scanning service bureau owned by Mike Raphael, used 3D Systems’ Geomagic Design X to help a group of amateur military historians restore the original Bantam Jeep prototype. The restoration challenge was that the vehicle’s bent frame and years of wear would make a traditional second‑generation workflow (scan → polygon mesh → NURBS) slow and prone to propagating surface imperfections.

Using Geomagic Design X’s third‑generation workflow, Direct Dimensions modeled directly from scan point data—eliminating the polygon and NURBS steps—so operators could “model out” dents and bends and produce perfected parametric CAD. The result was accurate, native SOLIDWORKS models with full history trees, enabling faithful reproduction of the Jeep’s design intent and efficient fabrication of restoration parts.
