A 3D Systems Case Study
B & J Specialty, a tool-and-die shop in Wawaka, Indiana, was called in after a customer found B‑pillar stampings out of spec and supplied limited CMM data that led to an incorrect rework plan. With an offshored die that needed urgent correction, the shop faced the prospect of a $20,000 mistake and a possible four‑week delay that could have jeopardized the OEM’s production schedule.
B & J used a GOM ATOS II white‑light scanner with Geomagic Control X to create 3D color maps, which showed material needed to be removed from the ends of the arc—not the center as the CMM data implied. The scans guided NC toolpaths, avoided a time‑consuming CMM inspection, prevented tooling damage, and after rework were used to build a parametric model in Geomagic Design X for the client’s CAD. The result: the costly mistake and delay were averted, rework was efficient and documented, and 3D scanning became a routine part of their process.
