3D Reverse Engineering Software Delivers Results for Formula SAE Team

3D Systems partnered with the University of Connecticut’s Formula SAE team, which needed an accurate 3D CAD model of their engine to improve vehicle design but had no existing digital data. The lack of engine geometry limited the team’s ability to iterate on intake, mounting and frame design for the competition.

Scanning specialist Bolton Works used 3D Systems’ Geomagic Wrap and Geomagic Design X to convert 3D scans of engine components into feature-based solid parts, then exported the assembly into SOLIDWORKS. The result: a complete, editable 3D engine model that enabled a more intricate intake mount and — for the first time — a racecar frame designed around the engine, jumpstarting the team’s development process.
