University of Udine - Customer Case Study

The University of Udine, in partnership with the Directorate of Antiquities of Duhok, faced the significant challenge of documenting a major archaeological discovery of ancient Assyrian rock reliefs in a complex and unstable region of Iraqi Kurdistan. Difficulties included poor drone signal due to radio interference and the need to create highly accurate 3D models of the massive, fragile bas-reliefs. The team used photogrammetry software from 3Dflow to process the captured imagery.

Using 3DF Zephyr, the solution from 3Dflow, the team processed hundreds of high-resolution aerial photos for each relief, generating precise textured 3D meshes. The final models for the best-preserved panels had a mean error of less than one centimeter. This work was critical in documenting the site, which was awarded the 2020 International Archaeological Discovery Award, helping to secure international support and funding for the protection and restoration of this endangered cultural heritage.
