A 3Dflow Case Study
The Department of Geological Sciences at Stockholm University, a geological sciences department, required a method to create a highly accurate 3D geological model of the challenging and rugged terrain of the Jabal Hafit anticline in the United Arab Emirates. Their challenge was to efficiently capture and process data from this large, difficult-to-access area to extract precise geological information for their research.
The solution from 3Dflow involved processing 5,728 drone-captured images using their 3DF Zephyr Aerial photogrammetry software to generate a detailed 3D reconstruction. This process, which included the use of ground control points, produced a dense point cloud, a textured mesh, and other outputs that allowed the researchers to extract geological data. The measurable impact was a significant increase in accuracy; when the project was reprocessed two years later with an updated version of 3DF Zephyr, the final mean residual error dropped dramatically from approximately 15 meters to just 2 meters.
