Enhancing Additive Manufacturing Education at HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences with 3D Spark

The HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences sought to enhance its additive manufacturing (AM) education to better prepare students for new design and manufacturing challenges. To achieve this, the university integrated 3D Spark's platform, a tool for Design for Manufacturing checks, technology selection, and production cost analysis, into its master module curriculum to provide students with practical, hands-on learning.

Using 3D Spark, students conducted projects such as optimizing a brake caliper and a wheelchair footrest. The solution provided by 3D Spark enabled rapid manufacturability checks, cost analysis, and material selection, which were critical for decision-making. The results included significant improvements, such as a 30% reduction in a component's mass and an 81% weight reduction on another part, while also teaching students to balance innovative design with economic viability.
