Case Study: AstraZeneca improves construction safety and collaboration with 3D Repo

AstraZeneca use BIM during the expansion of its largest UK manufacturing plant to reduce risk and improve collaboration

AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company, faced the challenge of managing complex construction risks at its Macclesfield manufacturing site without disrupting its critical drug output. Their existing thorough safety protocols needed enhancement to identify and visualize potential hazards earlier in the project lifecycle. To address this, AstraZeneca partnered with vendor 3D Repo to implement its SafetiBase platform as part of the Discovering Safety programme.

The solution from 3D Repo involved creating a federated 3D model of the building extension and using SafetiBase to map and visualize risks collaboratively in the cloud. This allowed the team to identify 40 non-obvious risks early, leading to significant design changes like relocating climate control plant equipment to avoid working at height. 3D Repo’s platform improved stakeholder communication, accelerated the project programme, and delivered time and cost savings by preventing later-stage revisions. The success has led AstraZeneca to plan using SafetiBase on future projects.
