3DP Helps Global Manufacturer Set Up New Manufacturing Plant

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, opened a new facility to machine extremely large parts and needed a way to mock up full‑size components to set up machining tools and develop metrology strategies. Rather than printing full-scale castings, engineers found quarter‑scale models (about 700 mm) met their needs and selected 3D Platform’s large‑format printer based on proven use at Caterpillar, comfort level, and a reasonable price.

Using the 3D Platform printer they produced scaled mock-ups, job aids (for example, 3D‑printed gauge mounts), and fixtures that streamlined machine setup, helped standardize critical measurements under their 5S program, and informed metrology procedures. Technicians report faster, more efficient setups and the ability to produce custom parts on demand; anecdotal ROI is positive, supported by responsive vendor help and community resources.
