Northumbrian saves £8.75 million with digital asset management and mapping

Northumbrian Water, working with 1Spatial and its 1Integrate product, needed to map a huge amount of transferred wastewater infrastructure after the UK government passed ownership of private drains and sewers to water companies in 2011. With very limited records for an estimated 13,500 km of additional pipes, the company faced an expensive, 15-year traditional surveying effort and difficulty planning maintenance and customer service improvements.

1Spatial implemented a rules-based, data-driven mapping approach that used existing network data and expert knowledge to infer missing asset details such as location, construction, flow direction and usage. The solution mapped the full transferred network in two years for £1.25 million, saving £8.75 million versus the original plan, cutting delivery time dramatically, and giving Northumbrian Water better information for faster issue resolution and future investment planning.
