Managing underground assets by accurately mapping depth

Northumbrian Water Group worked with 1Spatial to tackle the challenge of accurately mapping the depth of underground water assets. As utility networks have evolved over more than 100 years, depth records have often been incomplete or unreliable, creating risks for field workers, planning teams, and customer service.

1Spatial used its inference solution, underpinned by 1Integrate, to create a continuously learning data model that infers pipe depth from business rules and recalibrates as true depths are collected. The project was moved forward through virtual workshops during COVID-19 and is expected to save Northumbrian Water over £400,000 in three years by reducing strikes, unnecessary excavations, roadwork delays, and repair costs while improving safety and planning.
