Sasol cuts energy and software license costs

Sasol, an international energy and chemicals company, needed to reduce the environmental impact and operating costs of its 15,000‑strong PC and laptop estate while tightening software license management and audit readiness. The IT team sought a way to minimize power use without disrupting critical systems and to gain clear visibility of application usage so unused licenses could be reclaimed.

Sasol integrated NightWatchman with Microsoft ConfigMgr to apply PC power policies to 8,000 machines and deployed AppClarity to detect and reclaim unused software. Within weeks AppClarity reclaimed 3,000 licenses (ZAR 1.8M / $260K) on a partial vendor review, with a potential ZAR 82M saving if all unused software is reclaimed; NightWatchman is expected to save 1.7M kWh (ZAR 850K / 1,719 tCO2) annually. AppClarity was live in 48 hours and the project reached ROI in under two months.
