Claiming a premium environmental footprint

Aviva, the world’s sixth-largest insurance group serving 53.4 million customers, set a corporate responsibility goal to cut costs and reduce IT-related emissions after its sustainable IT taskforce found IT accounted for roughly 40% of the company’s emissions and that about 60% of PCs were being left on after hours and at weekends. To tackle this waste, the taskforce launched a PC power management project with 1E.

Following a successful trial of NightWatchman on 856 PCs that delivered a 6.5% reduction in electricity use, Aviva rolled the solution out to 30,000 PCs. The deployment is projected to save about 7.7 million kWh of electricity per year and reduce emissions by roughly 4,138 metric tonnes of CO2, while enabling safe automated shutdowns and out-of-hours maintenance.
