3 Ways Applications Could Get In The Way of Your Win10 Move

IBM Services supported a global engineering firm with a hardware-driven Windows 10 migration (upgrading 12,000–17,000 machines a year) and discovered application management was the biggest obstacle. The client faced a vast, noisy application estate—tens of thousands of app entries, widespread app sprawl, multiple versions per device that required specific install order, and the prospect of slow, manual installs. An initial SCCM imaging approach still took about 20 minutes per load and couldn’t meet the target build rate.

The team implemented 1E’s Windows Servicing Suite and Application Migration tool, using a curated software catalog, automated migration rules and pre-migration machine views to create customized user loads and respect licensing policies. The result was a much faster, automated migration that hit required build rates, reduced manual intervention and disruption, and saved millions compared with the previous automated approach.
