Westrail - Customer Case Study

The customer, Westrail (now known as TransWA), a Western Australian government railway operator, was challenged with quickly planning the proposed route for a new $550 million suburban rail system to Perth’s South West Corridor. They needed to produce a good, preliminary plan to visualize the route for stakeholders and prove the engineering design while meeting tight deadlines and securing environmental and community approvals. Vendor 12d Solutions provided its 12d Model (then known as 4D Model) civil engineering software to address this challenge.

The solution implemented by 12d Solutions enabled Westrail to define the optimum rail reserve in just 12 months. Using 12d Model, planners could quickly generate and assess alternative route scenarios, easily make changes to alignments, and produce hard copy plans for consultation. This allowed for the route to be engineered for high speeds and to meet strict land-use and aesthetic requirements. The vendor's software proved to be a superior planning tool that could handle large data sets and frequent changes efficiently, which was critical for completing the project on time.
