SMEC - Customer Case Study

The customer, SMEC, was tasked by the Sydney Catchment Authority with the detailed design of an auxiliary spillway for Warragamba Dam to mitigate extreme flood risks. The engineering challenge involved designing and modeling the massive 650-meter-long concrete spillway chute, associated roads, a bridge, and accurately calculating the placement for 1.8 million cubic metres of excavated spoil within a tightly confined area. For this complex project, SMEC utilized 12d Solutions' 12d Model (then called 4D Model) software.

The solution from 12d Solutions enabled SMEC's team to quickly create, modify, and visualize digital terrain models and design alignments. The software's robustness and intuitive interface allowed for rapid redesigns and the generation of perspectives that made the complex engineering plans easy for the client to interpret. As a result, SMEC could efficiently produce and check models throughout the design process, meeting the project's demands for speed and accuracy, which was critical for the successful completion of this major safety upgrade for Sydney's primary water supply.
