Arup, working on the M4 Smart Motorway project in Sydney, faced significant challenges in automating design reviews and hydraulic analysis. Their team longitudinal sections and assessing aquaplaning risk, which were prone to human error. Managing the project's extensive drainage network across multiple separate models also created performance issues and a time-consuming analysis process, requiring numerous individual storm event runs.

To overcome these issues, Arup engineers developed a series of custom macros within the 12d Model software. These included tools for automated batch plotting of road sections, dynamic aquaplaning assessment, and batch analysis of entire drainage networks. The solution from 12d Solutions dramatically increased efficiency and design consistency across the board. This significantly reduced the need for drafting input, saving the Arup team considerable time and money on this and subsequent projects.
