Case Study: City of Smyrna saves millions and accelerates lead compliance with 120Water

A 120Water Case Study

Preview of the City of Smyrna Case Study

City saves millions of dollars and prioritizes compliance well in advance of federal deadline

The City of Smyrna, GA, faced the challenge of developing a lead service line inventory to comply with the federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions ahead of the 2024 deadline. With a third of its 16,000 service lines of unknown material, the city needed to efficiently identify them without resorting to costly and invasive excavation methods that would disrupt the community.

120Water supported the city by implementing a water sampling program to verify the material of the unknown lines. The vendor sent informational postcards and 400 sampling kits to residents, enabling the city to classify its service lines accurately. This solution provided a 1,200% cost savings compared to replacing all unknown lines and positioned the city to achieve full compliance well before the federal deadline.
